Studio work, shown at the level of the floor
A selection of the kinds of studio problems we work on: layouts, lighting plots, sound and talkback, camera sessions and live show routines.

Rooms, rigs and routines we have worked on
These entries describe typical work across our five services. Each one shows how a practical decision on the floor or in the gallery made the day-to-day running of a studio simpler.

News studio floor layout
Camera positions, desk placement and cable routes were drawn so operators could move between shots without crossing each other. Floor markings and a cable plan went to the crew.

Presenter desk lighting plot
A key, fill and backlight arrangement was set for consistent skin tones across several presenters. The rig uses fittings the in-house crew can maintain without specialist help.

Pedestal camera training session
Operators practised smooth moves, framing and recovery from a missed cue on the studio floor. The session ended with a short live-style run to apply what had been covered.

Talkback and intercom set-up
Intercom channels were assigned so the director, floor manager and operators each heard what concerned them. Microphone positions on the desk were adjusted to reduce spill between presenters.

Gallery routine for a live show
Run-sheets and cue calls were rewritten with the director and vision mixer, then rehearsed twice. The aim was fewer spoken corrections once the programme was on air.

Robotic camera positioning
Preset shots were programmed and checked against presenter positions at the desk and the standing set. Operators were shown how to override a preset quickly during a live moment.
